Game Notes

Game Summary

After losing their opening game to the Tiger-Cats earlier this year, the Toronto Argonauts traveled down the highway to Hamilton’s Ivor Wynne Stadium with a definite score to settle. To many, this is more than just a game. It has been a semi-regular Labour Day tradition for many years and for Tiger-Cat fans, there is nothing they hate more than the Toronto Argonauts. 27,517 patrons jammed into Ivor Wynne on a beautiful late summer afternoon. The Argonauts got on the board first when K Mike Vanderjagt connected from 30 yards away at 6:43. They added to their lead at 9:42 of the opening frame when RB Mike “Pinball” Clemons was on the receiving end of a QB Doug Flutie pass from 6 yards away. Vanderjagt added the convert to put the Boatmen up by 10 after one quarter of play. The Argos would go up by 13 when Vanderjagt connected from 46 yards away at 3:18. The Tabbies finally got on the scoreboard on the very last play of the first half when QB Marvin Graves found WR Mac Cody alone in the end zone from 20 yards out. K Paul Osbaldiston added the convert to trim the lead to 6 after two quarters of play. Toronto dominated from this point on. Flutie upped Toronto’s lead to 12 when he plunged in from 1 yard out at 3:25. The Vanderjagt convert made the score 20-7 in favour of Toronto. Following a Vanderjagt 83 yard single, the Argo’s put the game out of reach when DB Adrion Smith stepped in front of a Graves pass and returned it 44 yards for the TD to make the score 27-7. A couple of Tiger-Cat miscues led to a Toronto safety and single and then the Argonauts would close out the scoring at 11:16 of the third quarter when Flutie found Clemons alone in the end zone for a 5 yard TD. The Vanderjagt convert made the final 38-7 in favour of Toronto. The win improved the Boatmen’s record to 9-1.
