Game Summary

It was the re-match the CFL fans in Edmonton had been waiting for, their hometown Eskimos avenging their loss to the arch rival Calgary just one week prior in Calgary. The 40,727 fans in attendance at Commonwealth Stadium saw their Eskimos jump out to an early 8-0 lead after the first quarter of play thanks to a P Glenn Harper 61 yard punting single at 7:18 and an RB Eric Blount 35 yard rushing TD at 11:34. The Stampeders opened up the second quarter scoring at 1:16 when QB Jeff Garcia hooked up with SB Allen Pitts for a 28 yard TD. K Mark McLoughlin added the convert cutting the Eskimos lead to just 1. However, Fleming extended the Edmonton lead following two Eskimo singles with a 33 yard FG running the score to 13 to 7 with just 2:05 to play in the half. Calgary K McLoughlin cut into the lead once again when he hit on an 11 yard chip shot on the final play of the first half. The score after two quarters of play had the Eskimos up by 3, 13-10. McLoughlin tied the game at 11:17 of the third period when he was good on a 31 yard field goal. This turned out to be the only scoring of the third quarter. McLoughlin accounted for all of the Stampeder fourth quarter scoring as he booted field goals of 39 and 43 yards putting the Stamps up by 6. This set up the climatic finish. Reserve QB Cody Ledbetter, who was in the game replacing the injured starter, Danny McManus, drove the team down field finally hooking up with SB Darren Flutie with no time remaining to tie the game. Fleming added the convert giving the Eskimos a well deserved 20-19 victory. The win improved the Esks record to 7-4 while the Stamps dropped to 9-2.
