Game Notes

Game Summary

27,209 Argonaut faithful came out on a beautiful Saturday afternoon to see their hometown Argos take on the Calgary Stampeders in what many called a Grey Cup preview. The Stamps, who came into the game on a two-game losing streak, put up the only first quarter points thanks to a K Mark McLoughlin 35 yard field goal at 7:19. Toronto cut the lead to 2 when K Mike Vanderjagt recorded a single off a 42 yard missed field goal at 2:11. 3:09 later, McLoughlin booted his second FG of the game, this one from 26 yards out to up the Calgary lead to 5. Calgary added to that lead at 12:33 when QB Jeff Garcia hooked up with SB Dave Sapunjis for a 15 yard major. The McLoughlin convert increased the Stampeder lead to 12. The Argos cut into that lead with just 0:18 seconds left in the first half when Vanderjagt was good from 12 yards out making the score 13-4 in favour of the Stampeders after two quarters of play. Whatever was said in the Argonauts’ locker room at halftime seemed to have worked as WR Jimmy “The Jet” Cunningham electrified the crowd with an amazing 93 yard punt return TD 3:30 into the third quarter. The Vanderjagt convert cut the Calgary lead to just 2. Vanderjagt tied the game with two singles and then WR Paul Masotti gave Toronto their first lead when he teamed up with QB Doug Flutie for a 97 yard pass and catch TD with just 16 seconds remaining to play in the third quarter. Vanderjagt added the convert on the final play of the quarter making the score 20-13 in favour of Toronto. McLoughlin added a single at 9:16 of the final frame to cut the lead to just 6 but Vanderjagt restored the Toronto lead to 9 when he was good from 45 yards out. The Stamps mounted a comeback and made it close when SB Allen Pitts was on the receiving end of a 17 yard Danny Barrett pass at 14:15. McLoughlin added the convert to cut the lead to one but this was as close as they would get. The final from SkyDome, Toronto 23, Calgary 22.
