With the Playoffs approaching, every game could mean a difference between making the playoffs or not. A win in this game by the Tiger-Cats would tie them with the Alouettes for second place in the East. Montreal got on the scoreboard in the first quarter when QB Tracy Ham connected with RB Michael Soles for a 36 yard touchdown passing play. K Terry Baker kicked the convert. The Alouettes dominated the first quarter and carried their momentum into the second. Just 0:56 in, Ham and Soles hooked up again, this time for a 5 yard passing touchdown. Baker’s convert put the Als up by 14. Hamilton fought back on their next possession scoring in just four plays. Former Alouette RB Mike Saunders capped the drive with a 1 yard run. K Paul Osbaldiston kicked the convert. Montreal extended their lead finishing their next possession with a 15 yard field goal off the foot of Terry Baker. The fast pace continued in the second as both teams moved the ball effectively. Following the Baker field goal, Calvillo marched the troops back up field connecting with Saunders for a 1 yard passing touchdown. Osbaldiston kicked the convert and, minutes later, sent a punt 72 yards through the end zone for a single. Hamilton trailed Montreal by 2 at half-time. Following a celebration in honour of the 1996 Hall of Fame Inductees, the Alouettes took control of the game in the third quarter. SB Jock Climie caught a short pass from Ham on Montreal’s second play from scrimmage and tiptoed 54 yards down the sideline for a touchdown. Baker kicked the convert and blasted the ensuing kickoff 76 yards forcing Hamilton to concede the single. Montreal continued to control the ball. At 9:01 of the third, Ham topped a 57 yard drive with a 1 yard touchdown run. With the score 32-15 in favour of the Alouettes, the Tiger-Cats began to take over. Calvillo hooked up with WR Jason Phillips on a 28 yard passing touchdown with only 1:47 remaining in the third. The Osbaldiston convert left the ’Cats trailing by 10 with one quarter to play. Hamilton continued to put points on the board as Calvillo threw his third TD pass of the game, this one a 4 yard toss to Saunders. Osbaldiston kicked the convert. Minutes later Baker kicked a 22 yard field goal for the Alouettes putting them ahead by 3. Hamilton took their first lead of the game at the 8:12 mark of the fourth quarter when Osbaldiston converted a passing touchdown from Calvillo to Cody over 10 yards. Montreal regained the lead as Baker sent a 26 yard field goal through the uprights. Hamilton got the ball with 2:28 remaining. Calvillo again marched the ball down field setting up a 32 yard field goal attempt by Osbaldiston with no time on the clock. “Ozzy” split the uprights winning the second game In two weeks on the last play. Hamilton moved into a tie for second place in the East with the win.
