Game Summary

15,025 gathered at Frank Clair Stadium on this cool October evening to see their hometown Riders give the West Division leading Calgary Stampeders all they could handle. However, in the end the Stamps came away with a 31-24 victory improving their record to 11-4 and increasing their Division lead to 4 points over the Edmonton Eskimos. K Mark McLoughlin put the Stamps on the board first with a 42 yard FG at 2:44 of the opening frame. SB Dave Sapunjis increased their lead to 10 with a 31 yard TD reception. McLoughlin then rounded out the first quarter scoring with a 50 yard single off a missed FG making the score 11-0 in favour of the Stampeders after one period of play. Ottawa K Wayne Lammle cut the lead to 8 with a 38 yard FG but Calgary countered back when RB Kelvin Anderson hooked up with QB Jeff Garcia for a 51 yard receiving TD. RB Dave Dinnall plunged over from 1 yard out for the Riders’ first major of the game cutting the lead to 8 points. McLoughlin restored the Stamps’ 11-point cushion with a 51 yard FG to round out the first half scoring with the Stamps up 21-10. After a scoreless third quarter, the Riders came on strong in the fourth frame. Following a Lammle single, QB David Archer hoisted a 17 yard pass into the end zone where it was hauled in by WR Wayne Walker. Garcia answered right back keeping the ball himself for a 17 yard major. However, Ottawa did not give up WR Willie Hinchcliff recorded a 37 yard receiving major but this was the end of the Rider comeback. McLoughlin rounded out the evening’s scoring with a 13 yard FG, his third of the game making the final Calgary 31, Ottawa 24.
