Game Notes

Game Summary

SkyDome was the scene for this battle between the 7-6 Winnipeg Blue Bombers and the 11-2 Toronto Argonauts. A Toronto win would clinch them the East Division title for the first time since 1991. The Bombers jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to a K Troy Westwood 30 yard FG. The Argos wasted no time in countering as newly acquired SB John Morton teamed up with QB Doug Flutie for a 9 yard TD giving the Boatmen a 7-3 lead after one quarter of play. The second frame belonged to the Argonauts as they racked up 17 unanswered points. K Mike Vanderjagt got the ball rolling at 2:31 with a 27 yard FG increasing their lead to 7 before WR Jimmy “The Jet” Cunningham and RB Robert Drummond hooked up with QB Doug Flutie for receiving TDs of 20 and 9 yards respectively. At the end of the first half, the Argonauts were up by 21. Two Westwood FGs of 53 and 28 yards, accounted for all of the third quarter scoring as the Bombers attempted to mount a comeback. Westwood added his fourth FG of the day, this one from 24 yards out, at 1:41 of the final frame. This was as close as the Bombers would get as Vanderjagt capped Argonauts’ win with a single and a 30 yard FG sending 17,310 patrons home happy. The Argonauts have earned the 1996 East Division crown with four regular season games to play.
