Game Notes

Game Summary

On the frozen tundra of Edmonton’s Commonwealth Stadium, the Argonauts and Eskimos hooked up in an epic battle. The Commonwealth Stadium grounds crew worked diligently to get the field ready after a hefty early morning snowfall. With the field clear, it was the two teams who took centre stage and put on quite a show. The Eskimos got on the board first when K Sean Fleming split the uprights from 55 yards out. This lead was short lived as Toronto QB Doug Flutie found WR Tyrone Williams alone for a 17 yard major. Argonaut K Mike Vanderjagt rounded out the first quarter scoring with a 42 yard single. The Eskimos tied the game 1:08 into the second frame when short yardage specialist LB Willie Pless plunged into the end zone from 1 yard away capitalizing on a fumble as Jimmy Cunningham attempted to return a punt out of his end zone. Both Fleming and Vanderjagt contributed 2 field goals to round out the first half scoring with the score tied at 14. Vanderjagt restored the Argonauts lead 6:44 into the third stanza with a 30 yard field goal, his third of the game. Fleming however countered back at 11:14 with a 15 yarder of his own sending the game into the fourth quarter with the score tied at 17. The two teams battled back and fourth in the fourth quarter and at 10:35 Toronto RB Robert Drummond bulled his way into the end zone from 4 yards out to score what would be the game winning TD. The win improved the Boatmen’s record to 13-3, while the Eskimos dropped to 10-7.
