Game Notes

Game Summary

Toronto native Giulio Caravatta got the nod as starting quarterback for the B.C. Lions this week against his hometown Argonauts. Caravatta took advantage of some great field position on B.C.’s second possession as he hit RB Cory Philpot with a 38 yard touchdown pass at 3:45. Toronto battled back minutes later capping a 71 yard drive with a 1 yard Robert Drummond touchdown plunge. B.C. regained their lead before the end of the quarter when K Lui Passaglia kicked a 37 yard field goal. Toronto tied the game just seconds into the second frame when K Mike Vanderjagt sent a 29 yard boot through the uprights. Toronto’s first lead came when Vanderjagt’s 40 yard field goal attempt sailed wide scoring a single for the Boatmen. It was Vanderjagt who got the call again as time ran out in the half. His 12 yard field goal attempt split the uprights sending the Argos to their locker room ahead by 4. A lacklustre third quarter saw only 3 points scored as Vanderjagt sent a 50 yard blast through for his third field goal of the day. However, the pace picked up in the fourth. B.C. opened the scoring barrage with a 21 yard field goal by Passaglia. For the Argos, Vanderjagt missed his fifth field goal attempt of the day as his 41 yard attempt sailed wide. They did manage to score a single as Philpot conceded deep in his own end zone. Toronto sealed the victory at 13:19 when QB Doug Flutie hit a wide open Mike “Pinball” Clemons who scampered in from 13 yards out. The convert took Toronto to 25 points for the afternoon. B.C. managed a small comeback when RB Ron Williams dove into the end zone from the 1-yard line. Damon Allen and Mike Trevathan hooked up for a 2-point convert but it was all too late as the Argos improved to 14-3 tying a team record for wins in a single season.
