Game Notes

Game Summary

Having met in the pre-season, these teams were set to go all out for Montreal’s home opener under new ownership. The revamped Alouettes were looking to get out of the chute early against a more balanced Tiger-Cat attack. The first quarter belonged to the Alouettes as they recorded 14 unanswered points. Their first score came at 3:38 as QB Tracy Ham connected with Jock Climie for a 30-yard touchdown pass. Just before the end of the quarter the 1995 South Division Most Outstanding Rookie exploded with a 60-yard punt return for a touchdown. Terry Baker converted both majors. The struggling Tiger-Cats managed to only score a field goal in the second quarter when Paul Osbaldiston hit from 40 yards out. The Alouettes continued to roll with RB Mike Pringle smashing his way in from the 1-yard line for the major. Baker kicked the convert. Early in the third, Ham found Chris Armstrong for a 10 yard TD pass to further extend the Alouettes lead. The convert attempt failed when a bad snap got by the Alouette holder. Late in the third, Osbaldiston put a single on the board for the Tabbies on a missed 45-yard field goal attempt. The fourth quarter belonged to the Tiger-Cats but their efforts proved to be futile. Anthony Calvillo connected with Ted Long for a 23-yard passing touchdown at the 3:00 mark. Calvillo’s two-point convert attempt failed. Later in the quarter, Calvillo found McMaster University grad Mike Morreale all alone for an 11-yard passing touchdown. Osbaldiston’s convert cut the Montreal lead to 10. It was too little, too late for the Ti-Cats as the remainder of the game was scoreless. The Alouettes held on to record their first victory of the year.
