Game Notes

Game Summary

It was yet another battle in the fierce rivalry that has been built over the years between these two franchises as 14,033 turned out on a beautiful summer Sunday afternoon in Hamilton. Unfortunately for the Ti-Cat faithful the results were not exactly what they were looking for as the visiting Toronto Argonauts left Ivor Wynne Stadium with a slim 20-15 victory. Both teams played hard nosed football for the first quarter, as is the tradition between these clubs, with neither team putting points on the board. The Argonauts got on the board early in the second frame when SB Felman Malveaux teamed up with Doug Flutie for a 4-yard pass and catch TD. Vanderjagt’s convert attempt was successful and the Argos staked a 7-0 lead. Later in the quarter Vanderjagt got the call again as he lined up for a 14-yard chip shot. He had no trouble extending the Argo lead to 10. Hamilton’s only scoring of the first quarter came on a 52-yard Paul Osbaldiston punting single. Toronto continued to roll in the third quarter putting another major on the board with a 14-yard Doug Flutie scamper into the end zone. Vanderjagt kicked the convert. Vanderjagt extended the Argonauts lead late in the third with a 33‐yard field goal which turned out to be Toronto’s final score of the game. Hamilton mounted a comeback at the midway point of the fourth quarter. After sputtering for three quarters, QB Anthony Calvillo capped a Hamilton drive with a 4-yard touchdown run for the Tabbies. Osbaldiston’s convert was good. A few minutes later, Hamilton moved the ball well again setting up a 28-yard receiving touchdown for Burt Thornton from Anthony Calvillo. Osbaldiston’s convert at 13:08 of the fourth turned out to all Hamilton could muster as they came up short in the first of four meeting between these long time, bitter rivals.
