Game Notes

Game Summary

The B.C. Lions played host to the Eastern Division leading Toronto Argonauts in one of the marquee match-ups of the young CFL season. Toronto opened the scoring when K Mike Vanderjagt’s 34-yard FG attempt was wide scoring a single. He made up for the miss however, as later in the quarter, his 12-yard FG was perfect. A 55‐yard kickoff return by Lion SB Al Shipman gave the Lions excellent field position resulting in veteran K Lou Passaglia’s 36-yard FG at 14:26 of the first quarter. Toronto wasted no time in adding to their slim lead in the second quarter when Vanderjagt connected on a 42-yard FG just 56 seconds into play. The Lions responded with a FG of their own off the foot of Passaglia to bring the Argo lead back to one. Later Vanderjagt’s 4th FG attempt of the night was good from to 27 yards out to once again put the boatman ahead by 4. The Argos started to pull away after two fumble recoveries led to TDs as QB Doug Flutie paired up with RB Robert Drummond for a 6‐yard TD reception and then hooked up with another RB, Mike Clemons to make the score 24-6 following Vanderjagt’s two converts. Vanderjagt added to his scoring totals with a 26-yard FG to close the half with Toronto ahead by a 27-6 score. The only scoring in the third quarter was a TD by Lions FB Sean Millington. Passaglia’s convert was good to close the Argo lead to 14 points. The teams exchanged TDs in the final quarter of play when Drummond busted in from 1-yard out at 11:38. Vanderjagt’s convert was good staking the Argos to a commanding 21 point lead. A late B.C. rally led to a TD when Lion pivot, Damon Allen, hooked up with WR Alfred Jackson with a minute left in the game. Passaglia struck the convert, but it was not enough as the Lions fell to the Argos 34-20. The win, accompanied by Montreal’s loss, gave the Argos sole possession of first place in the eastern Division.
