Game Notes

Game Summary

The Alouettes limped into SkyDome this week after two straight losses for a rematch of last year’s East Division Final. The Argonauts, on the other hand, where coming off their second straight victory and were looking to continue their winning ways. The Argonauts jumped to the early lead during their first drive of the game as Doug Flutie led the double-blue down the field from their own 20-yard line, culminating in a 1-yard rushing TD by RB Robert Drummond. K Mike Vanderjagt’s convert was good to make the score 7-0. Toronto continued to press during the first quarter when during their second possession, Drummond broke free of some tacklers sprinting 52 yards for the TD with a little over a minute left in the quarter. The extra point by Vanderjagt was good to make the score 14-0 for the home team. QB Marvin Graves entered the game replacing an injured Tracy Ham, but struggled helping the Als move the ball as Toronto continued to increase their lead during the second stanza of play. At 3:22 of the second quarter RB Mike Saunders caught a 17-yard pass from QB Doug Flutie. Vanderjagt’s convert was good to increase the Toronto lead to 21. Later that same quarter, Drummond scored his third touchdown of the night at 12:04, when he powered in from 1-yard out making the score 28-0 in favour of the Boatmen after the Vanderjagt convert split the uprights. The final points of the first half were also scored by Drummond as he once again took the ball in from the 1-yard line for the major. That made the score 35-0 at the half following the Vanderjagt convert. In the third quarter a Vanderjagt punt sailed into touch for a single point at 5:22 into play. The Toronto shut-out was lost when RB Mike Clemons, conceded a single point after Montreal K Terry Baker’s 44-yard FG attempt was wide to make the score 36-1 Toronto. Montreal scored their first major in the 4th quarter when Graves teamed up with WR Nigel Williams, for a 45-yard TD reception. Baker’s convert was good to make the score 36-8 Toronto. Later, Vanderjagt hit his first FG of the game from 47 yards out. Then at 11:20, Toronto LB Reggie Givens returned a fumble 91 yards for the major to increase the Toronto lead to 38. That’s the way the game ended as Toronto tightened its grip on first place in the Eastern Division while Montreal fell to .500 on the season.
