Both teams entered this game hungry for win number 2 of the year after disappointing starts to the 1997 campaign. Calgary earned an early lead when K Mark McLoughlin’s 41-yard FG split the uprights. Winnipeg K Troy Westwood matched his counterpart 8:35 into the game when his 32-yard FG tied the game at three. Calgary took the lead back with another FG from McLoughlin when he booted one down the middle from 36-yards at 11:50 of the first quarter. The first major of the game came two plays later when Winnipeg QB Kevin McDougal hooked up with WR Milt Stegall, for a 75-yard receiving TD that put the Bombers out in front by 10-6 score after Westwood’s convert was good. McLoughlin cut into the lead minutes later when his 37-yard FG was good to close out the quarter and bring the Stamps within one. The second quarter belonged to the Stampeders as QB Jeff Garcia connected with WR Travis Moore for a 4-yard TD reception at 7:22. McLoughlin’s convert was good to give the Stamps a 6-point lead. Garcia also completed a 21-yard TD reception to WR Terry Vaughn, at 12:55 of the second. The ensuing McLoughlin convert made the score 23-10 for the Stamps at the half. Calgary continued to add to their score in the third, as McLoughlin was good on his 4th FG of the night from 13 yards away. Later in the quarter Garcia called his own number as he scrambled into the end zone from 7 yards out for his 3 TD of the season. After McLoughlin’s convert the score was 32-10 much to the delight of the fans in McMahon Stadium. Calgary continued to pour it on in the final quarter of play. FB Farell Duclair hammered in from 1-yard out for the TD to increase the Stampeder lead. McLoughlin’s convert was good at 3:22. Bomber QB Kevin McDougal marshalled his troops in the last half of the fourth quarter when he hit WR Turhon O’Bannon for the 5-yard score at 8:13. Westwood was good for the convert. At 12:16 of the fourth McDougall threw his second TD pass of the night to WR Milt Stegall, but was unsuccessful in the two point convert attempt, leaving Calgary with an 18 point lead. Minutes later McLoughlin’s 47-yard FG completed the games scoring giving the Stampeders a 43-22 victory. The match featured the largest scoring output of the season for the Stampeders, who are still recovering from a couple of close losses at the start of the season.
