Game Notes

Game Summary

The two top regular season teams from a year ago met this week at McMahon stadium in what turned out to be a high scoring Western shoot-out. Calgary scored first against the Eastern Division leading Argonauts when K Mark McLoughlin connected on a 42-yard FG 4:30 into the game. McLoughlin then added to the Stamps’ lead when at 4:30 when his 42-yard FG attempt split the uprights. Toronto then countered back with the first major of the game as QB Doug Flutie hit WR Paul Masotti from 14 yards out at 9:21. K Mike Vanderjagt’s convert was good giving Toronto a one-point lead. Toronto added to their lead when Flutie teamed up with RB Mike Clemons for a 16-yard TD pass. Vanderjagt’s convert was good and the Argos were up by 8 after one quarter of play. McLoughlin cut into the Toronto lead with his third FG of the night, a 36-yard effort 16 seconds into the second quarter. Calgary continued to fight back and took the lead when QB Jeff Garcia threw a short 2-yard TD pass to WR Terry Vaughn. McLoughlin’s convert was good and the Stamps were on top by a 16-14 count. The see-saw battle continued as Flutie scampered in from two yards out. Vanderjagt’s convert was good and the Argos were back in front by 5. Garcia’s 18-yard TD pass to SB Vince Danielsen, and subsequent McLoughlin convert, rounded out the first half scoring with the Stamps on top by a 23-21 margin. Calgary increased their lead to 5 when Vanderjagt conceded a safety touch. Garcia then teamed up with WR Fred Bailey for a 6-yard TD strike. McLoughlin’s convert was good and the Stamps were in front by a 32-21 score. Their lead increased to 35-21 when McLoughlin was good on a 27-yard FG. Calgary DB William Hampton further increased Calgary’s lead when he stepped in front of an errant Flutie pass and returned it 61 yards for the score. The McLoughlin convert made the score 42-21 in favour of the Stamps. The Toronto offence got back on track early in the fourth quarter when Clemons returned a punt 56 yards to the end zone. Vanderjagt’s convert was good and the Argos trailed by 14. Then at 7:47 in the fourth quarter, McLoughlin struck for his fifth FG of the night from 33 yards out increasing the Calgary lead to 17. A late TD by Clemons was not enough as the Stampeders went on to win by a final score of 45-35, handing Toronto only their second defeat of the season.
