Game Summary

The first place Edmonton Eskimos played host to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers last week. The Bombers, hungry for a win, got off on the right foot 0:59 seconds into the game when QB Kevin McDougal threw a 69-yard TD pass to WR Milt Stegall. K Troy Westwood was good on the convert. Westwood put the Bombers up by a 10-0 count when his 39-yard FG attempt split the uprights. Edmonton K Sean Fleming cut into the lead at 8:55 in the opening frame when his 10-yard FG was good. Winnipeg opened the second quarter scoring when Westwood’s 32-yard FG sailed off line for a single. Edmonton QB Danny McManus got the Eskimos’ offence on track when he connected with SB Darren Flutie for a 6-yard TD. The two then teamed up on the ensuing two‐point convert attempt and the game was tied at 11. Edmonton took the lead later in the quarter when Fleming’s 23-yard FG split the uprights. The Eskimos increased their lead to 9 when McManus hit WR Henry Williams for a 38-yard TD pass. The Fleming convert gave the Esks a 21-11 half-time lead. The third quarter opened with McManus and Flutie connecting for their second TD play of the night, this one a 7-yard effort. Fleming’s convert was good, increasing the Edmonton lead to 17. Fleming increased their lead to 20 when he connected on a 20-yard FG at 11:32 of the third quarter. In the fourth quarter Edmonton continued to dominate play. McManus threw his fourth TD pass of the game, a 14-yard strike to WR Robert Gordon. Fleming’s convert was good and the rout was on. FB Tony Burse capped the scoring for the Eskimos when he powered into the end zone from one yard out. The Fleming convert at 13:44 of the final quarter made the final score 45-11 in favour of the home team.
