Game Notes

Game Summary

Edmonton visited Toronto this week in a rematch of last years Grey Cup. The game was also one of the marquee match-ups of the season with both teams were leading their respective divisions coming into the game. Toronto scored first when WR Paul Masotti hauled in a 6-yard TD pass from QB Doug Flutie. The score came at 11:40 of the first quarter giving Toronto a 7-0 lead after K Mike Vanderjagt’s convert was good for the extra point. Edmonton answered the Toronto challenge during their next drive when QB Danny McManus completed a 47-yard TD pass to sophomore SB Don Blair. K Sean Fleming’s convert split the uprights, tying the score at 7 with 1:09 remaining in the quarter. Toronto opened the second quarter scoring when Flutie threw a 27-yard strike to RB Mike Saunders 2:15 into play. Vanderjagt was good for the extra point. The see-saw battle continued as McManus connected on his second aerial TD of the night, a 8-yard toss to WR Shannon Myers. The Fleming convert was good. Toronto then recaptured the lead just before half-time when Vanderjagt’s first FG attempt of the game split the uprights from 21 yards out giving a 17-14 advantage to the Argonauts. The only scoring in the third quarter came on another Vanderjagt FG from a distance of 14 yards at 10:57. The final stanza of play saw Toronto pull away from the Eskimos as Flutie connected with RB Mike Saunders for a 4-yard score. Vanderjagt was good on the convert. Then, Toronto RB Robert Drummond won a 78-yard footrace for his League leading 12th TD of the season at 9:35. The convert gave the Boatmen a 24-point lead. The final scoring play of the match was Vanderjagt’s third FG of the game, a 35-yard attempt that made the final score 38-14 in favour of the Double Blue. The win kept Toronto’s undefeated home record intact, but decreased the Eskimo lead in the West to only one game after the B.C. Lions defeated the Saskatchewan Roughriders
