Game Notes

Game Summary

It was game two of the annual Labour Day doubleheader as the 7-2 Argos traveled down the highway to meet the Hamilton Tiger-Cats who were in search of their second win of the season and first against Toronto. In front of a season high crowd of 18,377, the hometown side recorded the only scoring of the first quarter as Paul Osbaldiston’s 26-yard FG was good. However, this as close as they would get as the Toronto offensive machine rounded into form in the second quarter. It began at 3:43 when QB Doug Flutie found WR Derrell Mitchell alone for a 16-yard major. Vanderjagt added his first of what would turnout to be his first of six converts. The Flutie-Mitchell team connected again at 7:12, this time for a 55-yard TD, putting the Boatmen ahead by a 14-3 score. Vanderjagt then hoofed an 80‐yard punting single upping the lead to 15-3. Toronto rounded out the first half scoring with just 20 seconds remaining as the “Pinball” corralled a 16-yard Flutie pass sending them into the locker room with a 22-3 halftime lead. The Toronto offensive barrage continued early in the third quarter and at 2:22, Clemons teamed up with Flutie for his second 16-yard major of the game. The convert increased Toronto’s lead to 29-3. The Argonauts’ defence got into the action at 5:22 of the third when DB Marcello Simmons stepped in front of an errant Hamilton pass and returned it 65 yard for the TD. Toronto increased their lead to 42-3 when Adrion Smith scooped up a loose ball following a blocked punt and rambled into the end zone for a 16-yard TD. The ensuing convert upped the lead to 43-3. Vanderjagt would add a 15-yard FG making the final, Toronto 46, Hamilton 3.
