It was a cool, damp September afternoon as the Stampeders played host to the Roughriders. The Stamps were looking to get back on track after a loss to the Eskimos, while the Roughies were looking to make it two wins in a row. The Stampeders opened the scoring at 3:42 of the opening frame when QB Jeff Garcia found SB Vince Danielsen alone in the end zone for a 4-yard TD. K Mark McLoughlin’s convert attempt was good to put the Stamps in front by a 7-0 margin. The ’Riders countered with a major of their own at 6:41 when DT Jason Simmons broke through and blocked a McLoughlin FG. The ball was subsequently picked up by CB Todd McMillon and returned for a 64-yard TD. K Paul McCallum’s convert tied the game at 7. The Stamps went ahead at 12:38 of the first when WR Terry Vaughn teamed up with Garcia for a 5-yard TD. McLoughlin’s second convert of the game closed out the first quarter scoring putting the Stamps up by a 14-7 margin. The see-saw battle continued early in the second frame when Saskatchewan RB, Mike Saunders carried the ball into the end zone from 3 yards out. McCallum’s extra point attempt was good and the game was tied at 14. McLoughlin would break the tie with just 3 seconds remaining in the first half when his 26-yard FG attempt sailed through the uprights. The score after two periods of play read Calgary 17, Saskatchewan 14. The Stamps added to their lead 1:30 into the final quarter when RB Kelvin Anderson corralled a Garcia pass for a 23-yard TD. The McLoughlin convert increased the Stamps’ lead to 24-14. Calgary P Tony Martino put the Stamps up by 11 after his 55-yard punt sailed into the end zone for a single. The ’Riders countered with a McCallum 28‐yard FG which cut the Calgary lead to 8. McLoughlin answered right back with a 48-yard FG of his own restoring their 11-point cushion. The ’Riders would go on to score a TD on the final play of the game when QB Kevin Mason teamed up with WR Donald Narcisse for a 46-yard score. The McCallum convert made the final, Calgary 28, Saskatchewan 24.
