Game Summary

This week’s edition of Friday Night Football featured the 1-12 Tiger-Cats against the 7-6 Lions in what turned out to be another exciting CFL match which was decided in the final plays of the fourth quarter. The Tiger-Cats entered BC Place Stadium hungry for their second win the season, but it was the Lions who scored first when K Lui Passaglia hoofed a 36-yard FG 4:53 into play. Passaglia then scored the next points of the game as his 43-yard FG at 8:50 of the first quarter gave the Lions a 6-0 edge. During the Hamilton’s next drive, K Paul Osbaldiston responded by nailing a FG of his own from 11 yards out at 11:56 of the same quarter cutting the BC lead in half. The first major of the match came in the second quarter when Hamilton CB Orlondo Steinauer intercepted QB Damon Allen’s pass and returned it 82 yards. Osbaldiston’s convert at 4:09 gave the Tabbies their first lead of the night. BC rallied however, and their next drive culminated in Passaglia’s third FG of the night, this time from 39 yards bringing the Lions within 1-point. Hamilton cushioned their lead later in the second when QB Rickey Foggie scampered into the end zone from 1-yard out at 12:39. Osbaldiston’s convert attempt was successful. Osbaldiston closed out the first half scoring with a 26-yard FG giving the Tabbies a 20-9 half-time advantage. In the third quarter Hamilton continued their strong play and added to their lead at 2:49 when Foggie teamed up with WR Terry Guess for the games first passing TD. The Osbaldiston convert increased the Hamilton lead to 18 points. Passaglia and Osbaldiston exchanged FGs from 19 and 18 yards respectively closing out the third quarter scoring. The Lions scored first in the final period of play when a fake punt attempt by Steinauer went awry causing Hamilton to concede a safety. The Tiger-Cats rebounded, however, as Osbaldiston was successful in his fourth FG attempt giving the Cats a 33-14 lead. Then the wheels started to fall off as Hamilton gave up three unanswered TDs in the final 5 minutes of the game. The first was a 9-yard pass by Allen to WR Alfred Jackson at 10:18. The 2-point conversion was unsuccessful. Then two minutes later, Allen hooked up with Jackson once again for the major, this time a 5-yard toss. Passaglia’s convert was good closing the lead to 6 points. The Lions tied the game with only 11 seconds remaining after FB Sean Millington powered into the Hamilton end zone from one yard out. Passaglia was successful on the convert to the joy of the 18,258 Lion faithful on hand to witness the event. The 34-33 win put the Lions into a three‐way tie for first place in the Western Division.
