Game Notes

Game Summary

It was all you could do to hold onto your hat last Sunday afternoon at Taylor Field in Regina as the Roughriders played host to the Edmonton Eskimos. Winds throughout the game gusted to 93-kph making playing against the wind treacherous at best. Edmonton K Sean Fleming accounted for the all of the first quarter scoring with singles of 72 and 92 yards, as well as a 52-yard FG putting the Eskimos on top by a 5-0 margin. The ’Riders had the wind in the second quarter and K Paul McCallum took advantage of the natural element scoring 13‐points. He put the ’Riders on the scoreboard at 4:36 with a 67-yard single and then followed up with four consecutive FGs of 43, 22, 38 and 14 yards sending Saskatchewan into the locker room with a 13-5 half-time lead. McCallum opened up the second half scoring with two more FGs of 48 and 19 yards upping the ’Rider lead to 19-5. Then at 12:46, RB Mike Saunders scored the games first major scampering into the end zone from 27 yards out. The ensuing McCallum convert increased their lead to 26-5. McCallum then rounded out the third quarter scoring with his seventh FG of the game, this one a 29-yard effort. The score after three periods of play read Saskatchewan 29 and Edmonton 5. The Eskimos hoped that the wind would aid in their efforts in the fourth quarter and they were right as Fleming booted his second FG of the game from 30 yards out at 4:34. Just over 4 minutes later, SB Darren Flutie teamed up with QB Danny McManus for a 15-yard TD. Fleming added the convert but this was as close as the Eskimos would get on this day as the Roughriders emerged with a 29-15 victory. Of note in this game were McCallum’s seven FGs, one shy of the League record.
