The Saskatchewan Roughriders traveled east to Montreal this week to take on the Alouettes who were smarting after their their first loss in eight games at the hands of the Stampeders last week. It was Montreal however, that came out of the gates firing taking the early 3-0 lead off the foot of K Paul McCallum’s 28-yard FG at 5:59. The ’Riders added to their lead when DB Terryl Ulmer returned a punt 68 yards for the games first major 6:59 into play. McCallum was good on the convert. Montreal cut the lead to 3 after QB Tracy Ham found wide-out Millard Coleman in the end zone from 17 yards out just under the 10 minute mark of the first quarter. K Terry Baker was good on the single point. RB Mike Saunders reestablished Saskatchewan’s 10-point lead after he rumbled over the goal line from the 3-yard line. McCallum’s convert split the uprights. McCallum was also successful in his 35-yard FG attempt to close the quarter giving Saskatchewan a 13-point advantage. McCallum was also the first to score in the second period of play when his 25-yard FG attempt sailed through the uprights at 4:38. Baker countered with a FG of his own at 9:40 from the Saskatchewan 25-yard line. McCallum added one more FG with under 30 seconds remaining in the half to give the ’Riders a 26-10 lead going into the dressing room. In the third quarter, Montreal started to mount a come-back after Baker nailed his second FG of the night, a 46‐yard shot at 2:52. Baker then struck a 45-yard FG that sailed wide, but still scored a single. Montreal rounded out the scoring in the third quarter after Ham teamed up with WR Chris Armstrong for a 15-yard toss at 14:02. Baker’s convert trimmed the Saskatchewan lead to 5 points. McCallum helped the Saskatchewan cause in the final stanza of play striking a 23-yard FG at 8:51. Montreal however, continued their late rally with Baker hoofing a 24-yard FG to keep Montreal within striking distance. Montreal took the lead for the first time in the game with under 2 minutes play as Ham hooked up with SB Jock Climie in the end zone with a 27-yard pass. The 2-point conversion attempt failed but it proved irrelevant as Montreal hung-on to their 1-point lead to complete their exciting come-from-behind victory
