Game Notes

Game Summary

The East Division leading Toronto Argonauts hosted the West Division leading BC Lions in one of the marquee match-ups of Week #15. Toronto jumped on the board first after Argo pivot Doug Flutie found recently activated WR Jack Jackson in the end zone for a 35-yard throw at 9:12 into play. K Mike Vanderjagt’s convert gave Toronto a 7-point lead. Flutie then called his own number at 14:36, scrambling to the goal line from 1-yard out. Vanderjagt’s convert was good to increase the Toronto lead to 14-points. Toronto picked up where they left-off in the second quarter as RB Mike “Pinball” Clemons caught a 4-yard pass from Flutie at 4:39. Vanderjagt’s convert was good. K Lui Passaglia put the Lions on the board at 8:45 when his 40-yard FG attempt sailed through the uprights. Toronto restored their 21-point lead however by the end of the half, after Vanderjagt struck a 26-yard FG at 13:09. Toronto continued to dominate in the second half of the game as Clemons zigzagged his way through defenders en route to a 47-yard TD run at 2:35. Vanderjagt’s single point made the score 31-3 in favour of the Boatmen. Clemons was also on the receiving end of Flutie’s 2-yard pass for his third TD of the match. Once again Vanderjagt nailed the convert. In the fourth quarter Vanderjagt added to his scoring total after his 49-yard punt was conceded for a single point in the end zone. The games scoring was rounded out at 13:23 when Toronto S Lester Smith intercepted a pass by back-up QB Giulio Caravatta and returned it 34 yards for the major score. Vanderjagt’s convert made the final score from SkyDome, Toronto 46, BC 3. This ups Toronto’s league leading record to 13-2 and keeps them comfortably in the East Division lead while dropping the Lions into a tie with Calgary for second place in the West.
