The Stampeders rode into Toronto this weekend searching for a win to keep them in the hunt for first place in the West Division. However, they were facing a Toronto team that is undefeated at home this season. Toronto jumped to the early lead when RB Mike Clemons hauled in a 2-yard pass from QB Doug Flutie 6:00 into the opening frame. K Mike Vanderjagt’s convert attempt was good. Flutie then hooked up with Canadian wide-out Duane Dmytryshyn for a 23-yard score at 12:10 of the first stanza. Vanderjagt’s convert gave Toronto an early 14-0 lead. However, the Stampeders cut into that lead before the end of the quarter when K Mark McLoughlin nailed a 49-yard FG at 14:59 to put 3 points up on the board on the visitors side. Toronto responded quickly when Flutie found Clemons for the second time for a 54-yard TD reception 0:50 seconds into the quarter. Vanderjagt hit the convert and then followed with a 29-yard FG at 8:31 giving the Boatmen a commanding 24-3 lead. McLoughlin rebounded with a FG of his own from 52 yards out but Toronto continued to click offensively as Flutie threw his third TD pass of the afternoon to WR Paul Masotti. The 24-yard TD toss came at 14:37. Vanderjagt connected on the convert attempt and then followed it with a 33-yard FG attempt with no time on the clock sending Toronto into the locker room with a 34-6 lead. Calgary’s defence tightened up in the third quarter holding Toronto scoreless while their offence managed to move the ball culminating in a 51-yard FG by McLoughlin that cut the Argonaut lead to 25 points. The final stanza of play took a turn for the worse for the Red and White after Toronto LB Reggie Givens recovered a fumble and rumbled 91 yards for the major. Vanderjagt’s convert split the uprights. Calgary QB Dave Dickenson threw his first TD pass of the game at 11:08 to SB Allen Pitts. A successful 2-point conversion pass followed the 26-yard pass to Pitts. QB Andre Ware came in to replace Doug Flutie and quickly found Mitchell open for a 71-yard score at 13:10. Vanderjagt’s convert closed out the scoring for the afternoon to make the final from SkyDome Toronto 48, Calgary 17. The win made Toronto’s Don Matthews the CFL’s regular season all-time winningest Coach eclipsing Frank Clair’s 147 career victories.
