Game Notes

Game Summary

The Edmonton Eskimos hosted the BC Lions in Commonwealth Stadium this week in yet another important West Division showdown. A win for the Lions meant the possibility of hosting a home playoff game while an Edmonton victory would clinch first place in the West and the first round bye that goes along with it. To the delight of the 31,958 Eskimo faithful it was Edmonton that came out of the gates first as K Sean Fleming struck a 29-yard FG at 8:51 to give the home team a 3-0 advantage. QB Danny McManus then found SB Darren Flutie open for a 18-yard TD reception just 47 seconds into the second quarter. Fleming’s convert was good. The ensuing kickoff by Fleming sailed into end zone from 87-yards out scoring a single, which was followed by a conceded safety by BC punter Giulio Caravatta giving Edmonton a 13-0 advantage. Fleming scored one more FG from 15 yards away to close out the first half scoring as Edmonton headed into the dressing room with a 16‐0 lead. Edmonton’s offence continued to roll along in the third quarter as McManus continued to move the ball culminating in a Tony Burse 1-yard TD run at 2:39. Fleming was good on the convert single. He also scored his second kickoff single during the next play. B.C gave up another team safety at 6:15 of the same quarter making the score 26-0 for the Esks. The safety was followed up by McManus’s second TD pass of the game as he found SB Eddie Brown alone for a 17-yard TD reception. Fleming’s convert was good and was followed by yet another kickoff single giving Edmonton a 34-point lead. BC finally got on the board with under a minute left in the third quarter when QB Damon Allen teamed up with SB Mike Trevathan in a 19-yard scoring play. Passaglia nailed the convert cutting the Edmonton lead to 27 points. That was all offence the Lions would generate however, as the final stanza of play belonged to Fleming who punted a 55-yard single followed by FG’s from 38 and 32 yards respectively giving Edmonton a 34-7 victory on a beautiful autumn day in the Alberta capital.
