The BC Lions hoped to start the season off on the right foot in front of their home fans but the visiting Edmonton Eskimos spoiled those plans jumping to the early lead and holding on to it for the win. BC scored first as veteran K Lui Passaglia in his CFL record breaking 23rd season hoofed a 18-yard FG to give the Lions a 3-point lead at 6:49 of the first quarter. At 9:13 of that same quarter K Sean Fleming got the Eskimos on the board with a 54-yard punting single. Fleming also was good on a trio of FGs in the second quarter from 50, 17 and 22 yards respectively. This gave the Esks’ a 10-3 lead going into the locker-room at half-time. In the third stanza of play Passaglia missed a 51-yard FG attempt but still scored the single to cut the lead to 6 points. Edmonton continued to press in the third, however, as RB Calvin Williams scampered into the end zone from 5 yards out at 9:45. Fleming’s convert was good as was his 23-yard FG attempt at 14:18. BC accounted for all the scoring in the 4th quarter as Passaglia’s punt sailed into the end zone scoring a single. Later, SB Al Shipman hauled in a 9 yard pass from QB Damon Allen at 11:53. Passaglia’s convert was good making the final score from B.C. Place Stadium Edmonton Eskimos 20, BC Lions 12.
