Game Notes

Game Summary

In a rematch of last years Grey Cup, the Saskatchewan Roughriders played host to the Toronto Argonauts in front of 21,734 enthusiastic fans at Taylor Field for the year’s first edition of TSN Friday Night Football. Toronto opened the scoring with 11:31 remaining in the first quarter when rookie K Noel Prefontaine missed a 33-yard FG but still scored the single. K Paul McCallum replied later that quarter with a 30-yard FG giving the Green ’Riders a 3-1 advantage. Prefontaine hoofed a 79-yard punting single at 12:09 to round out the scoring in the first. Saskatchewan took control of the game in the second quarter holding Toronto scoreless while lighting up the scoreboard with 10 points. McCallum got things rolling with a 26-yard FG at 7:58 followed by the first TD of the game as QB Reggie Slack found wide-out Curtis Mayfield for a 62-yard TD reception with 2:29 remaining in the half. McCallum’s convert was good giving the ’Riders a 13-2 lead going into the locker-room. Things tightened up in the third quarter with the only scoring coming off the foot of Prefontaine as he scored a single off a missed FG attempt from 22 yards out with 4:26 to go. McCallum increased Saskatchewan’s lead nailing a 33-yard FG. Toronto attempted a late rally scoring their first TD of the game as receiver Duane Dmytryshyn scampered in from 1-yard out. Prefontaine’s convert was good. McCallum iced the game, however, when his 27-yard FG with 5:26 remaining in the game split the uprights making the final score from Regina 19-10 in favour of the hometown heroes.
