Game Notes

Game Summary

In a rematch of last week’s contest the Edmonton Eskimos hosted the BC Lions at Commonwealth Stadium. The Lions went into the game still smarting from last weeks 20-12 loss while Eskimo veterans still remember BC spoiling last year’s home opener with a victory over the Green and Gold. The match was a low scoring affair with the first points coming off the foot of K Lui Passaglia who paced the Leo’s to a 3-point lead at 9:12 of the second quarter with a 24-yard FG. Edmonton K Sean Fleming quickly replied with a 44-yard FG at 12:15 sending the teams to the dressing room tied at 3. In the third quarter, the Edmonton defence upped their lead to 6-3 when they tackled BC QB Damon Allen in the end zone for a safety. The Eskimo offence then got on track when QB David Archer found Canadian SB Don Blair for a 51-yard pass receiving TD at 10:07. Fleming’s convert rounded out the third quarter scoring with Edmonton on top. At 7:27 of the fourth quarter Fleming padded the lead with a 28-yard FG but BC made it interesting when return specialist Jimmy “The Jet ” Cunningham returned a punt 89 yards for the major at 11:35. Passaglia’s convert cut the lead to 5 points but that was as close as BC would get as they dropped their second straight match to Edmonton by a 15-10 score.
