Game Notes

Game Summary

In a rematch of last week’s contest the Winnipeg Blue Bombers hosted the Hamilton Tiger-Cats in Winnipeg Stadium. The Bombers went into the game still smarting from last weeks 33-13 loss. Both teams had trouble moving the ball early which was indicative of the 0-0 score after one quarter of play. The scoreless draw continued for most of the second quarter until Tiger-Cat RB Ronald Williams powered into the end zone from 1-yard out at 10:30. This was followed by a 37-yard interception return by CB Eric Carter with 15 seconds remaining in the half. K Paul Osbaldiston was good on both convert attempts giving Hamilton a 14-point advantage going into the third quarter. Osbaldiston opened the scoring in the second half with a single off a missed FG attempt late in the quarter. Then with no time remaining on the clock Williams ran in his second 1-yard TD of the night. Osbaldiston’s convert made the score 22-0 for the visitors heading into the final stanza of play. Winnipeg got on the scoreboard at 5:27 of the fourth quarter when SB Matt DuBuc corralled an 8-yard pass from QB Chris Vargas. K Troy Westwood’s convert split the uprights giving Winnipeg 7 points. Another costly turnover 1:46 later, however, ended any hopes of a comeback as CB Orlondo Steinauer picked off an errant pass by Vargas and returned it 52 yards for the major. Osbaldiston nailed the convert to make the final score 29-7 in favour of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. The win boosts Hamilton’s record to 2-1 while keeping Winnipeg winless in the young 1998 CFL season.
