Game Notes

Game Summary

The winless BC Lions traveled east to Taylor Field to play the defending Western Division champion Saskatchewan Roughriders under cloudy skies. Saskatchewan jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on the first play of the game when K Wayne Lammle’s kickoff sailed into the end zone for a single. K Paul McCallum put the ’Riders up by four with a 49-yard FG attempt at 11:13. BC K Lui Passaglia got the Lions on the board 0:16 into the second period with a 32-yard FG. The Lions then grabbed the lead when QB Damon Allen hooked up with newly acquired receiver Rod Harris for an 85-yard TD reception. Passaglia’s convert was good and the Lions were out in front by a 10-1 margin. Passaglia increased their lead to 13-1 at 14:33 when his 34-yard FG attempt was good. Wide-out Jim Sandusky rounded out the first-half scoring with a 57-yard punting single off a broken play making the score 14-4 for the Lions at the half. The see saw battle continued into the second half as the teams exchanged FGs from 28 and 32 yards respectively. Passaglia’s 69-yard punting single at 8:57 of the final stanza of play increased the Lions lead to 11 points. That lead was short lived, however, as FB Shawn Daniels hauled in an 8-yard pass from QB Reggie Slack at 6:00 for the game’s second major. McCallum’s convert cut the Lions lead to just 5 points. However, RB Robert Drummond quickly re-established the 12-point cushion for the Lions with a 66-yard rushing TD. Passaglia’s convert was successful. A late TD reception by WR Curtis Mayfield would not be enough for Saskatchewan as the Roughriders fell to the Lions by a score of 25-20. The win gives the Lions their first victory of the season while dropping the Saskatchewan out of first place in the East.
