Game Notes

Game Summary

It was an overcast day in Hamilton as the Hamilton Tiger-Cats took to the field against the visiting Saskatchewan Roughriders in this east/west match-up. The game began as a defensive affair with the only scoring in the first quarter coming off the foot of K Paul Osbaldiston as his 70-yard punt sailed into the end zone for a single at 12:33 giving Hamilton a 1-point lead. Osbaldiston added to their lead at 10:48 of the second quarter when his 46-yard FG attempt sailed wide at 10:48 scoring another single. However, he made up for his miss less then 2 minutes later by nailing a 44-yard FG giving Hamilton a 4-0 advantage. Saskatchewan got on the board on the last play of the first half as punter Wayne Lammle missed a 42-yard FG attempt scoring a single. In the third quarter, Saskatchewan grabbed an 8-5 lead four minutes into play when FB Chris Szarka blocked an Osbaldistan punt at Hamilton’s 11-yard line. The ball bounced into the end zone where Szarka completed the play by falling on it scoring the game’s first TD. K Paul McCallum’s convert was good. Hamilton responded later in the quarter as C Frank Rocca caught the first TD pass of his CFL career from 6 yards out at 13:11. Osbaldiston’s convert restored Hamilton’s 3-point cushion as both teams prepared for the final stanza of play. Four minutes into the fourth quarter QB Danny McManus scored a rare rushing TD for the Tabbies to increase Hamilton’s lead to 11 points after the Osbaldiston convert. The Saskatchewan offence just could not get things going in the second half going pointless while Hamilton rounded out the scoring with a 3-yard TD run by RB Ronald Williams at 12:57. Osbaldiston’s convert gave Hamilton a 26-8 victory over Saskatchewan and an enviable 4-1 record, best in the East.
