Game Notes

Game Summary

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers traveled west this week to take on the BC Lions. Both teams have struggled early in the season and were looking to turn things around with a win. The game started slowly with the only scoring in the first quarter coming off the foot of veteran K Lui Passaglia when he struck a 31-yard FG at 6:59. The scoring increased in the second quarter as RB Robert Drummond scored his third TD of the season powering in from 1-yard out at 7:28. Passaglia’s convert was good. Then on the ensuing kickoff, SB Ted Long fumbled the return which was scooped up by CB Steve Muhammed and carried 16 yards for the major. Passaglia hit the convert pacing the Lions to an early 17-0 advantage. Winnipeg rallied late in the quarter when K Troy Westwood’s 35-yard FG attempt missed wide but was conceded for a single at 10:40. However, Westwood was perfect on a 16-yard attempt making the score 17-4 for BC at the half. Both defences continued their solid work in the third quarter not allowing either team extended offensive drives. Westwood’s 54-yard FG at 5:44 marked the only scoring in the quarter. In the final period of play Passaglia extended BC’s lead to 13 points with a 42-yard FG 39 seconds into play. Westwood answered back for Winnipeg with FGs from 52 and 25 yards respectively, but it was too little, too late as the Lions went on to defeat the Blue Bombers by a 20-13 score. The win brings BC closer to that elusive .500 mark while keeping Winnipeg winless in the 1998 CFL season.
