Game Notes

Game Summary

The BC Lions arrived at Molson Stadium on the McGill University campus looking to extend their 2-game winning streak while the Alouettes were attempting to halt a 2-game losing streak after starting the season 3-0. QB Damon Allen got the Lions on the scoreboard early when he teamed up with veteran wide-out Jim Sandusky for a 6-yard TD reception. K Lui Passaglia’s convert made the score 7-0, 4:12 into the game. Montreal quickly countered, however, under the leadership of QB Anthony Calvillo who started in place of an injured Tracy Ham. At 9:35 of the first quarter, Calvillo found newly acquired WR Chris Armstrong for an 8-yard TD reception. K Terry Baker chipped in the convert to tie the score at 7. On Baker’s ensuing kickoff, Montreal took the lead by a point when the BC returner caught the ball in the end zone and opted not to attempt a runback, conceding a single. Baker padded their 1-point cushion with 5 seconds remaining in the quarter, nailing a 44-yard FG giving the Als a 4-point advantage. In the second quarter, both defences played solidly with the only points coming off the foot Passaglia who was successful on FGs of 14 and 34 yards respectively, pacing BC to a 13-11 score at the conclusion of the half. As in the first quarter, Montreal quickly responded to BC’s offensive output by retaking the lead when Baker’s 10-yard FG 2:24 into the third quarter put the Als up by one. Baker added a punting single at 10:35 giving the hometown team a 2-point lead heading into the final stanza of play. In the fourth quarter, Montreal continued to pull away when Calvillo called his own number, sneaking in the ball from 1-yard out at 7:10. Baker’s convert made the score 22-13 in favour of the Alouettes. BC attempted a late game rally but were turned back by a strong goal line stand by the Montreal defence, settling for a 9-yard FG by Passaglia at 12:02. That’s all the scoring that would occur making the final from Molson Stadium, Montreal 22, BC 16.
