It was a beautiful summer night in Hamilton as the Tiger-Cats took the field against the Edmonton Eskimos in the tail end of a home and home series. Hamilton jumped out to an early lead when K Paul Osbaldiston hoofed a 31-yard FG 3:21 into play of the first quarter. Edmonton responded later in the quarter, scoring on a 7-yard rush by RB Troy Mills at 8:13. K Sean Fleming’s convert was good giving the Eskimos a 7-3 advantage. Hamilton closed the gap to 1-point by the conclusion of the first quarter when Osbaldiston nailed a 50-yard FG at 13:22. In the second quarter, the kickers continued to hold the hot foot as Fleming’s 15-yard FG at 4:51 split the uprights. At 8:50 Osbaliston’s 46-yard FG attempt sailed wide scoring a single. He made up for the miss 3:36 later, however, when he was perfect from 43-yards out tying the game a 10. Edmonton grabbed a 16-10 halftime lead when Fleming registered a pair of FGs from 51, and 45 yards respectively. After halftime Hamilton began to pull away in the third stanza when SB Mike Morreale hooked up with QB Danny McManus for an 18-yard TD reception at 4:53. Then at 8:15 RB Ronald Williams powered into the end zone at 8:15 for Hamilton’s second major of the night. Osbaldiston was good on both converts, pacing Hamilton to an 8-point lead. Hamilton continued to pull away from Edmonton, using a little razzle-dazzle when RB Archie Amerson threw the first TD pass of his CFL career to wide-out Andrew Grigg at 12:21. Osbaldiston’s convert gave Hamilton a 31-16 lead at the end of the quarter. In the final period, the Hamilton offence continued to shine. At 1:07 Amerson was on the receiving end of an 89-yard play scoring Hamilton’s third TD of the night. Osbaldiston’s convert was good. Hamilton’s next score came when QB Jimmy Kemp, replacing starter David Archer, was sacked in the end zone giving up a two-point safety at 5:39. Osbaldiston then hoofed a 48-yard punting single making the score 41-16 for the hometown heroes. QB Mike Cawley, who took over for McManus midway through the final stanza of play, finishing Hamilton’s scoring when he scrambled into the end zone from 8 yards out at 11:25 giving Hamilton a 32-point lead after Osbaldiston’s convert. Edmonton’s third QB of the night, Marcus Crandell, rounded out the scoring when he found WR Henry “Gizmo ” Williams in the seam for a 65-yard receiving major. It was too little, too late, however, as Hamilton swept the second game of the series by a 48-23 score to the delight of the 21,175 fans in Ivor Wynne Stadium.
