In a rematch of last week’s game won by Calgary 46-27 in overtime, the Saskatchewan Roughriders travelled west to McMahon Stadium to take on the Stampeders. The Stamps dominated the first quarter of play scoring 1:40 into the game when QB Jeff Garcia hooked up with SB Vince Danielsen for a 5-yard scoring reception. This was followed by a 1-yard TD run by FB Duane Forde at 11:06. K Mark McLoughlin was good on both converts pacing Calgary to a 14-0 lead at the end of the quarter. In the second period, Martino scored a 67-yard punting single before Saskatchewan scored their first point of the night when wide-out Curtis Mayfield found a seam and took QB Reggie Slack’s pass 73 yards for the major at 4:25. K Paul McCallum’s convert was good making the score 15-7 for the hometown heroes. Calgary continued to add to their lead when Garcia found Danielson for the second time, completing an 8-yard scoring play at 10:24. McLoughlin added the convert and then nailed a 17-yard FG giving Calgary an 18-point cushion. The ’Riders made the score 25-10 at the half, however, when McCallum’s 52-yard FG with no time remaining split the uprights. Saskatchewan continued their comeback in the third quarter, when Slack and Mayfield teamed up once again, this time scoring on a 24-yard reception at 4:43. McCallum’s convert cut Calgary’s lead to 9 points. Calgary quickly responded, however, when Martino’s second punting single was followed by an exciting 44-yard TD run by RB Kelvin Anderson at 10:37. McLoughlin’s convert was good. In the final quarter, Andersen continued to run the ball well, powering into the end zone from 1-yard out at 4:22. The running game continued to click on all cylinders as QB Dave Dickenson, who replaced Garcia late in the game, called his own number, taking the ball into the end zone at 10:30. McLoughlin’s convert made the score 47-17 for Calgary. WR Donald Narcisse rounded out the scoring in the game as he caught a 37-yard pass at 13:13. It was not enough, however, as the Stampeders went on victory by a 47-24 margin placing themselves first in the West Division.
