Game Notes

Game Summary

The Montreal Alouettes hosted the Toronto Argonauts at McGill Stadium in an important East Division match-up. The Alouettes got the start to the game they wanted when K Terry Baker’s 23-yard FG sailed through the uprights giving Montreal an early 3-0 lead 7:23 into the first quarter. In the second quarter, Montreal added to their total when QB Anthony Calvillo, starting in place of an injured Tracy Ham, found SB Jock Climie in the end zone for an 11-yard strike at 5:22. Baker’s convert was good giving Montreal a 10-point advantage. P Noel Prefontaine got the Boatmen on the scoreboard at 9:37 when he hoofed an 86-yard punt that bounced through the end zone scoring a single point. This was followed by a 20-yard TD reception at 13:53 by CFL receiving leader, SB Derrell Mitchell from QB Kerwin Bell. Rookie kicker, Arek Bigos, making his first regular season CFL appearance, was good on the convert as well as a 37-yard FG with no time remaining on the clock giving an 11-10 advantage to Toronto heading into the second half. In the third quarter, both defences tightened up with the only scoring coming off the foot of Baker when his 27-yard FG split the uprights recapturing the lead for the Als by a slim 2-point margin. The see-saw battle continued into the final stanza of play as Bigos’ 21-yard FG put Toronto back out in front. The lead was short lived, however, after RB Mike Pringle scored the game’s first rushing TD when he scampered in from 9 yards out at 9:21. Pringle completed the play by taking the ball to the end zone on the ensuing convert scoring two points. Baker also contributed to the Montreal cause in the fourth quarter, nailing a 47-yard FG at 14:08 giving the Als a commanding 24-14 lead late in the game. With 10 seconds remaining in the match, Bell teamed up with WR Paul Masotti for Toronto’s second TD of the night which was followed by two-point conversion attempt that fell short. The ensuing onside kick attempt failed, ending Toronto’s hopes for a comeback as Montreal went on to defeat the Argonauts by a final score of 24-20. Montreal’s win ensures them at least a second place standing in the very competitive East Division.
