The West Division leading Calgary Stampeders were in B.C. this week to take on the Lions in an important divisional match-up. Calgary entered the contest with one of the League’s highest ranked offences and it did not take long for that explosive firepower to get rolling as FB Duane Forde hooked up with QB Jeff Garcia for a 25-yard TD reception at 3:54 of the first quarter. At 9:24 Garcia threw his second TD pass to WR Travis Moore for a 19-yard play. K Mark McLoughlin was good on both converts pacing the Stampeders to a 14-0 lead at the end of the first period. In the second quarter, Calgary picked up where they left off as Garcia found WR Terry Vaughn for a 43-yard scoring play at 1:57. McLoughlin’s convert gave the Stamps a 21-point lead until 3:37, when K Lui Passaglia put the Lions on the board with 51-yard FG. McLoughlin re-established Calgary’s 21-point cushion with 27-yard FG at 8:15. BC quickly responded, however, as Passaglia nailed his second FG of the quarter, a 14-yard attempt at 12:13. With exactly 1 minute remaining in the half Garcia threw his third TD of the night, this time a 5-yard toss to SB Vince Danielsen. McLoughlin’s convert was good. Passaglia rounded out the scoring in the half kicking a 51-yard FG to make the score 31-9 for the visitors. In the third quarter, Calgary continued to pull away from BC as McLoughlin nailed a 30-yard FG at 3:14. This was followed by a 42-yard TD reception by SB Allen Pitts at 10:26. McLoughlin’s convert gave the Stamps a 32-point lead at the conclusion of the quarter. Calgary’s offence continued to click in the final stanza of play when Pitts hauled in in his second TD reception at 5:15 from Dave Dickenson who replaced Garcia at QB in the fourth quarter. Dickenson also hooked up with rookie wide-out Aubrey Cummings at 12:42 for a 67-yard scoring strike to complete the game’s scoring. McLoughlin was good on both convert attempts making the final from McMahon Stadium Calgary 55, BC 9. The win ensures the Stampeders first in the West Division with a 6-2 record while dropping the Lions to 3-5 on the season.
