The Montreal Alouettes came into Regina looking for a win to tie the Hamilton Tiger-Cats for first in the East after the Tabbies loss to the Argos the day before. The Roughriders, on the other hand, were looking to put the brakes on a 4-game losing streak, their longest of the season. It was Montreal that drew first blood, however, when K Terry Baker’s 68-yard punt sailed through the end zone scoring a single point at 1:36 of the first quarter. Baker added to Montreal’s total, hoofing FGs from 42 and 37 yards respectively giving the Alouettes a 7-point lead at the end of the quarter. K Paul McCallum replied for Saskatchewan in the second stanza of play by nailing a 49-yard FG 6:00 into play. Baker restored Montreal’s 7-point cushion before halftime, however, when his 22-yard FG attempt with no time remaining in the quarter split the uprights. In the second half both defences continued to hold strong, keeping the players on the other side of the ball off balance and preventing them from marching the ball downfield. This meant that kickers continued to hold the hot foot as McCallum accounted for all the scoring in the third quarter by hoofing FGs from 44 and 52 yards bringing Saskatchewan to within 1-point of Montreal. At 2:09 of the final period, Baker’s 28-yard FG made the score 13-9 for the Alouettes. McCallum added a 22-yard FG at 12:12 to bring the ’Riders back to within 1 point, but that’s all the offence they would muster as the Montreal Alouettes went on to win a close game from Taylor Field by a final score of 13-12.
