Game Notes

Game Summary

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers travelled west to Commonwealth Stadium this week still searching for their elusive first win of the 1998 season. The Edmonton Eskimos on the other hand were also desperate for a win after dropping two straight to the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Things looked good for Winnipeg early when CFL Combined Yards leader RB Eric Blount scored on a 28-yard rush at 4:26 of the first quarter. K Troy Westwood’s convert was good, as was his 43-yard FG at 8:10 pacing Winnipeg to an early 10-0 lead. Edmonton responded before the end of the quarter, however, when QB Jimmy Kemp, starting in place of an injured Dave Archer, found WR Myron Wise for a 1-yard TD pass at 13:38. K Sean Fleming’s convert was good. In the second quarter, Westwood added to Winnipeg’s lead by hoofing a 13-yard FG at 1:04. Seventeen seconds later, however, Kemp threw his second TD pass of the night, this time a 3-yard strike to wide-out Joseph Rogers, tying the game. Fleming’s convert was good, as was his 29-yard FG at 14:35, giving Edmonton a 17-13 lead going into the locker room at the half. A turnover accounted for the first score in the third period of play when Edmonton DB Dwayne Provo intercepted an errant pass by QB T.J. Rubley and returned it 49 yards for the major at 4:34. Fleming’s convert was good. Fleming also added to Edmonton’s total when his 64-yard punt bounced through the end zone scoring a single point. Westwood rounded out the scoring in the third quarter by nailing a 34-yard FG at 13:34. Neither team could manage to score in the final stanza of play making the game final 25-16 in favour of the Edmonton Eskimos. Edmonton’s victory solidifies their second place position in the West Division while keeping the Winnipeg winless 8 games into the 1998 season.
