The surging Toronto Argonauts travelled west to take on the winless Winnipeg Blue Bombers, hosts of the 1998 Grey Cup. The Argo’s, still riding high from last weeks victory over Hamilton, jumped to an early lead when Winnipeg P Bob Cameron conceded a two-point safety at 7:13 of the first quarter. K Arek Bigos nailed a 37-yard FG at 9:44 to extend Toronto’s advantage. QB Kerwin Bell added to Toronto’s lead tossing a 12-yard pass to RB Mike Clemons at 13:37. Bigos’ convert was good making the score 12-0 for the Argonauts. The ensuing 77-yard kickoff by Bigos sailed into the end zone where it was conceded for a single point giving Toronto a 13-point lead at the conclusion of the first quarter. In the second quarter, K Troy Westwood ended Toronto’s shutout when his 17-yard FG at 4:35 split the uprights. Toronto responded quickly, however, when WR Nigel Williams was on the receiving end of Bell’s 13-yard TD pass at 10:24. At 14:04 Bell threw his third TD pass of the night, this time an 8-yard strike to veteran wide-out Paul Masotti. Bigos was good on both converts pacing Toronto to a 26-3 lead. Winnipeg rallied before the end of the half, however, as QB Kevin Mason, who replaced starter T.J. Rubley midway through the second quarter, threw an 8-yard bullet to WR Mario Bailey for Winnipeg’s first major. Westwood’s convert was successful making the score 27-10 for the Boatmen going into the locker room at halftime. Winnipeg scored the only points in the third quarter when Westwood’s 45-yard FG cut into Toronto’s lead by three at 13:37. Westwood also scored the first points of the fourth quarter, hoofing a 33-yard FG at 4:14. Bigos responded to Westwood’s challenge by nailing a 22-yard FG at 9:21. A turnover accounted for the final score in the game when DB Antonio Bonner intercepted an errant Kevin Mason pass returning it 58 yards for the major. The convert by Bigos made the final score 37-16 for the Toronto Argonauts bringing their record above .500 for the season at 5-4. The loss for Winnipeg, however, means the Bombers are still looking for their first win at the midway point of the 1998 campaign.
