In the second leg of the Canadian Football League’s annual Labour Classic double header the Edmonton Eskimos travelled south to play the Calgary Stampeders in front of 37,611 fans filling every nook and cranny of McMahon Stadium. K Mark McLoughlin gave Calgary the early lead when his 49-yard FG at 3:28 of the first period split the uprights. For an encore McLoughlin then hoofed an 80-yard kickoff single pacing the Stamps to a 4-point lead. At 13:08 Edmonton K Sean Fleming conceded a two-point safety due to a bad snap by kicking the ball through his own end zone making the score 6-0 for Calgary at the end of the quarter. Calgary continued to hold the hot offensive hand in the second stanza when McLoughlin nailed a 12-yard FG at 4:36. At 13:50 QB Dave Dickenson, in for an injured Jeff Garcia, made his mark on the game finding RB Kelvin Anderson in the end zone for a 13-yard reception. McLouglin’s convert gave the hosts a 16-0 halftime lead. The perennially strong Edmonton defence shut down Calgary in the third quarter, only allowing a pair of punting singles off the foot of P Tony Martino. Calgary added another single to their point total in the final quarter when McLoughlin’s 45-yard FG sailed wide 42 seconds into play. Calgary’s shut out ended, however, because 3:20 later QB Jimmy Kemp, who replaced starter Dave Archer earlier in the quarter, scrambled to the end zone from 7 yards out. Fleming’s convert was good. Fleming also contributed another single to the Edmonton cause when his 69-yard punt bounced through the end zone scoring a single point and cutting Calgary’s lead to 19-8. That was close as Edmonton would get, however, as Anderson scored his second TD of the night for Calgary by running the ball in from the 18-yard line. McLoughlin’s convert rounded out the scoring to make the final score Calgary 26, Edmonton 8. Calgary’s victory places them all alone in the West Division penthouse while dropping Edmonton to second place. These two teams will meet next week in Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton for what is sure to be an emotional rematch.
