The Toronto Argonauts played host this week to the BC Lions. A win by the Argos would propel them past the .500 mark while the Lions were also hungry for a victory to move them out of a third place tie with Saskatchewan in the West. The Lions looked good early as ageless K Lui Passaglia struck a 42-yard FG 2:10 into the first quarter. Then at 3:33, QB Damon Allen found recently signed wide-out Alfred Jackson 40 yards down-field for the game’s first major. Passaglia’s convert was good. K Arek Bigos got the Boatmen on the board before the end of the quarter, hoofing a 26-yard FG to make the score 10-3 for the visitors. Passaglia opened the scoring in the second quarter with an 18-yard FG just 19 seconds into play. Toronto quickly replied, however, when SB Derrell Mitchell teamed up with QB Kerwin Bell for a 15-yard scoring play at 2:55. Then Mitchell and Bell combined 2:28 later on another TD play, also 15 yards in length. Bigos was good on both converts. The see-saw battle continued as BC responded to the Argo challenge when Allen threw his second TD pass of the night, a bullet to SB Rod Harris at 12:42 from 4 yards out. Passaglia’s convert was successful. At 14:45 Bell and Mitchell combined once again for a scoring play to make the score 24-20 for the Argos after Bigos’ successful convert heading into the locker rooms at the half. Both defences tightened up in the third stanza, as Passaglia and Bigos exchanged FGs from 33 and 20 yards respectively maintaining Toronto’s 4-point cushion. BC sacked Bell in the end zone to score a safety to open the scoring in the final period of play and cut the lead to 2 points. At 6:49 Passaglia gave the lead to the Lions for the first time since the opening quarter when his 45-yard FG split the uprights. Bigos responded by hoofing a 47-yarder of his own to retake the lead for Toronto. Toronto cemented the win at 13:23 when Mitchell caught his fourth TD pass of the afternoon from Bell. Bigos nailed the convert making the final score 37-28 to the delight of the hometown fans.
