The Toronto Argonauts played host this week to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The Blue Bombers, fresh off their first victory of the season last week against the Saskatchewan Roughriders and were hoping that new QB Troy Kopp would duplicate his performance of last week. It was Toronto, however, that scored first when K Arek Bigos missed a 35-yard FG attempt scoring a single point as the ball sailed through the end zone at 5:19 of the first stanza. Bigos made up for his miss before the end of the quarter by nailing a 27-yard FG at 12:10. His FG at 12:51 of the second period were the only points scored in the quarter giving Toronto a 7-0 lead at the half in this tight defensive game. In the third quarter, Winnipeg finally got on the board when K Troy Westwood nailed a 42-yard FG. Toronto responded 1:59 later by scoring the game’s first major when QB Kerwin Bell found Canadian wide-out Duane Dmytryshyn for a 44-yard play. Bell continued to move the ball well for Toronto throwing his second TD pass of the night, a 20-yard toss to WR Nigel Williams on Toronto’s following possession. Bigos was good on both converts giving Toronto a 21-3 lead. Westwood cut that lead by 3 points before the end of the third quarter when he hoofed a 36-yard FG at 10:25. RB Mike Clemons scored the game’s first rushing TD when he scrambled past the goal-line from 6 yards out at 1:39, padding Toronto’s lead to 22 points after Bigos’ convert. Kelly Wiltshire continued to build on the lead when he scooped up a fumble and returned it 36 yards for the major at 2:14. Bigos was successful on the convert and on his 45-yard FG 3:22 later. Winnipeg attempted a late rally as LB Doug Hocking picked off an errant pass by Bell and returned it 2 yards before lateraling the ball to S Maurice Kelly who took the ball 90 yards for the TD. Winnipeg’s ensuing two-point conversion was successful when Kopp found RB Eric Blount in the end zone to complete the scoring play. At 11:38, Bigos missed his second FG of the night from 42 yards out scoring a single to make the score 39-14 for the Boatmen. The Argonaut defence accounted for the next points when CB Donald Smith intercepted Kopp’s pass at 12:39 and returned 4 yards before lateraling the ball to fellow CB Adrion Smith who returned the ball 63 yards for the major. Blount scored a late rushing TD from the 1-yard. The ensuing two-point Winnipeg convert was successful, but it was too little, too late as Toronto went on to beat the Blue Bombers by a 46-22 margin.
