Game Notes

Game Summary

The Toronto Argonauts entered this game looking for a victory to move them into a second place tie with Montreal Alouettes in the East Division. The Edmonton Eskimos, on the other hand, were looking to keep hold of their firm grip on second spot in the West. Toronto got on the board first when K Arek Bigos struck a 25-yard FG at 4:35 of the opening period pacing Toronto to the early 3-0 lead. Toronto quickly added to that total when QB Kerwin Bell teamed up with WR Nigel Williams for a 5-yard scoring play at 10:38. Bigos’ convert was good. K Sean Fleming replied on behalf of Edmonton when he nailed a 44-yard FG at 12:13 giving Edmonton 3 points. Bigos added a single when he missed a 45-yard FG making the score 11-3 for the Boatmen at the end of the quarter. The Eskimos scored first in the second stanza when Fleming’s 50-yard FG attempt was good at 2:49. P Noel Prefontaine added a 50-yard punt single for Toronto at 6:18. Bigos then extended Toronto’s lead further by nailing a 34-yard FG at 11:31. He also added a 11-yard FG giving the Argonauts an 18-6 lead at the half. Just 29 seconds into the third quarter, Bell and Williams teamed up the second time of the night on a 62-yard reception giving Toronto a 19-point advantage after Bigos struck the convert. Fleming cut into the lead at 2:20 with a punting single but Bigos continued to add to the Argo’s total by striking a 37-yard FG at 10:20. At 12:52, QB Dave Archer found SB Don Blair in the end zone for Edmonton’s first major of the match. Fleming’s convert made the score 28-14 Toronto heading into the final period of play. Just 10 seconds into the fourth quarter, Prefontaine struck a huge punt that travelled 64 yards through the end zone to score a single. 1:43 later, however, Archer found Blair in the end zone for the second time to complete 21-yard scoring play. Fleming’s convert was successful. Bigos, however, was not so prosperous as his 32-yard FG at 12:27 sailed wide to score a single. A late rally by Edmonton cumulated in a 1-yard run by Archer at 13:18. The two-point conversion was good bringing the Esks to within 1 point of the Argonauts. But that was as close as they would come as the Boatmen held on for a thrilling victory over Edmonton by a 30-29 score. Also of note in this game was the 16 catch night of Argonaut SB Derrell Mitchell, tying a CFL record for most receptions in a single game.
