Game Notes

Game Summary

The East Division leading Hamilton Tiger-Cats played host this week to the fourth place Winnipeg Blue Bombers. Hamilton had beaten Winnipeg in their two previous meetings this year but Winnipeg was coming off an impressive win over the Calgary Stampeders in Week 13 action. Hamilton opened the scoring at 4:14 of the first quarter when RB Ronald Williams broke through the line and rumbled 66 yards to the end zone. QB Danny McManus then found running back Archie Amerson alone in the end zone for a 15-yard receiving TD. K Paul Osbaldiston was successful on both converts pacing the Tabbies to a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. Hamilton continued to pressure Winnipeg’s defence in the second stanza and at 7:47 McManus threw his second TD pass of the night, a 62-yard play to wide-out Andrew Grigg. Osbaldiston’s convert increased Hamilton’s lead to 21-0. Winnipeg got on the scoreboard at 11:54 when K Troy Westwood’s 40-yard FG split the uprights. Osbaldiston’s 62-yard punting single at 12:55 was closely followed by McManus’s third TD pass of the game, this one to WR Bobby Olive at 14:34. Osbaldiston’s convert increased Hamilton’s lead to 29-3 at the midway point of the match. Winnipeg’s big play defence were responsible for the game’s next score when DE Grant Carter scooped up an Amerson fumble and returned it 10 yards before lateraling the ball to DB Antonio Banks who scampered the remaining 7 yards to the end zone at 5:21. Westwood’s convert cut the lead to 19 points. Osbaldiston added 27-yard FG at 8:55 to finish the scoring in the third quarter. In the final period, Osbaldiston and Westwood exchanged FGs of 27 and 25 yards respectively. At 5:56 of the final frame, last year’s Most Outstanding Canadian player, RB Sean Millington, found the end zone from 2 yards out. Westwood added the convert and the a single, however, it was too little, too late as the Tiger-Cats went on to win the game by a 35-21 margin.
