The Calgary Stampeders played host to the Winnipeg Blue Bombers this week. Calgary entered the game looking to become the West Division Champions and tie up home field advantage for the playoffs. Winnipeg on the other hand, already eliminated from post season play, were looking to play the role of spoiler. Winnipeg scored first when at 7:20 of the opening quarter WR Mitch Running teamed up with QB Troy Kopp for a 24-yard scoring play. K Troy Westwood’s convert was good. Westwood then booted the ensuing kickoff through the end zone scoring a single giving Winnipeg an early 8-0 lead. Calgary responded when Allen Pitts caught a 49-yard pass from QB Jeff Garcia for the major at 9:00. It was Pitts 98th career pass receiving TD, setting a new CFL record for most pass receiving TDs all-time regular season. Fellow receiver Terry Vaughn followed up Pitts’ heroics by scoring aTD of his own on a 12 yard passing play at 12:50. K Mark McLoughlin was good on both converts making the score 14-8 at the conclusion of the quarter. In the second quarter McLoughlin’s 34-yard missed FG single at 5:11 was the only score giving Calgary a 15-8 edge as the teams went into the dressing room at halftime. Winnipeg opened the scoring in the third quarter when P Tony Martino was forced to concede a safety touch at 3:07. Calgary’s offence, however, continued to click on all cylinders as League TD leader RB Kelvin Anderson continued to add to his totals plunging into the end zone from 1-yard out. McLoughlin’s convert was good. As in the third quarter Winnipeg scored first in the final stanza of play when WR Milt Stegall was on the receiving end of a 62-yard pass from Kopp just 18 seconds into play. Westwood’s convert cut Calgary’s lead to 5 points until Anderson found the end zone for the second time in the game extending Calgary’s point total to 29 after McLoughlin’s FG. Pitts added another TD before the end of the night snagging a 10-yard pass from Garcia before RB Eric Blount returned a punt 92 yards for the major at 13:28. Winnipeg’s two-point conversion attempt failed and McLoughlin added a 44-yard FG for Calgary to make the final score 39-23 in favour of the Stampeders.
