In the fall of 1902, there was an attempt to have the MRFU championship decided in the fall of each year. The Winnipeg Rowing Club wanted to join the MRFU. The Rowing Club was willing to play the fall schedule but the spring schedule could conflict with training needed for the Rowing season.
The Winnipegs were against the fall schedule as the best crowds showed up in the spring. Some suggested that the spring had better crowds because many people only showed up when the championship was on the line. The Winnipegs felt that poor autumn weather and the fall harvest were the reasons for smaller crowds in the fall - the Winnipegs voted against the change.
In September 1903, the Winnipegs left the MRFU and the fall championship was adopted by the MRFU.
