Game Notes

Game Summary

Following a come from behind win last week, the Ottawa Rough Riders were out to prove their worth to newly appointed CEO Jim Durrell. The Toronto Argonauts, however, proved to be too strong on both offence and defence for the Riders. Toronto scored early when kicker Mike Vanderjagt was successful on a 32 yard field goal attempt. On Toronto’s next possession, QB Doug Flutie engineered a 73 yard drive that climaxed with a 1 yard touchdown run by Flutie. Vanderjagt kicked the convert. With no time on the clock in the first half, Ottawa kicker Wayne Lammle hammered a punt 69 yards into the end zone forcing Jimmy Cunningham to concede the single. The Argos continued on a roll in the second quarter. Outstanding running back Robert Drummond capped a 75 yard drive with a 3 yard touchdown run. Again, Vanderjagt kicked the convert. Ottawa’s Lammle scored 3 more for the Riders on a 25 yard field goal attempt. This turned out to be the last scoring play of the night for Ottawa. Toronto’s first passing TD came early in the third quarter. Flutie hit Tyrone Williams on an 2 yard dump pass play for the major. Vanderjagt’s convert was good. A few minutes later Vanderjagt sent a 36 yard field goal attempt through extending Toronto’s lead. The Argos’ final scoring play of the game was Flutie’s second passing TD of the match. Flutie connected with long time Argo Paul Masotti for an 11 yard touchdown. Vanderjagt’s covert made the final score 34 to 4 in favour of the home side.
