The Toronto Argonauts traveled east to the Big “O” in a possible preview to the Eastern Division showdown. The Als’ came out of the gates strong as QB Tracy Ham hit wide-out Chris Armstrong for a 17-yard TD reception at 5:44. Ham followed that up with his second scoring toss, this time a 35-yard strike to another wide‐out, Millard Coleman at 9:47. K Terry Baker was good on both converts. Toronto’s rookie of the year nominee, SB Derrel Mitchell had the games next score as he hauled in a 17-yard pass from QB Doug Flutie at 12:31 to cut the Montreal lead to 7 after K Mike Vanderjagt’s convert. One minute later, however, Ham and Armstrong combined for their second TD reception of the night from 65 yards out. Baker was good on the convert. With no time remaining in the first quarter Toronto responded as Flutie and Mitchell also hooked up for their second TD of the quarter covering 19 yards on the play. In contrast to the first quarter no TDs were scored but in the second quarter the kickers were kept busy as Vanderjagt nailed FGs from 27 and 22 yards respectively at times of 7:35 and 12:25. Baker chipped in with a 16-yard FG for the Als’ at 14:04. Vanderjagt, however, struck one more FG from 35 yards out with one second left in the half cutting Montreal’s lead to a slim 2-point margin going into the locker rooms at the half. The second half saw the offensive fireworks continue as Toronto’s Most Outstanding Player nominee Doug Flutie called his own number in a 1-yard TD run at 6:13. The Vanderjagt convert gave Toronto their first lead of the game by a 5 point margin. The lead was short lived however, as Baker had a FG attempt sail wide for a single which was followed up by FB Bruno Heppell’s 61-yard fumble recovery TD run from a blocked punt. Baker’s convert was good making the score 33-30 for the home squad entering the final stanza of play. Baker opened the scoring in the 4th quarter just 49 seconds into play with a 31-yard FG that was followed 45-yard missed FG by Vanderjagt. Montreal iced the victory at 13:01 of the quarter as Tracy Ham scooted into the end zone from the 14 yard line to put Montreal ahead by 12 points. Toronto made a late charge after Mitchell caught his third TD pass of the night from Flutie from 3 yards out. Vanderjagt’s convert made the final score from Olympic Stadium, Montreal 43, Toronto 38, ending Toronto’s bid for a club record 16 win season.
