Game Summary

The Toronto Argonauts played host to the Saskatchewan Roughriders this week. The match had important playoff implications with the Argos looking to move into second place in the East Division while the Roughriders were looking to take possession of third place in the West. Toronto opened the scoring at 4:34 of the first quarter when K Arek Bigos struck a 23-yard FG giving Toronto an early 3-0 lead. Saskatchewan countered before the end of the quarter when QB Reggie Slack scrambled into the end zone from the 2-yard line at 12:01. Paul McCallum’s convert made the score 7-3 Saskatchewan heading into the second stanza of play. A turnover accounted for Saskatchewan’s next score as DB Terryl Ulmer intercepted an errant Kerwin Bell pass and rambled 63 yards before lateraling to CB Todd McMillon who took it the remaining 29 yards for the major at 5:27. McCallum’s convert was successful increasing the ’Rider lead to 14-3. McCallum would up their lead to 17-3 at 11:33 when his 17-yard FG sailed through the uprights. Bigos added a single at 14:21 after a 27-yard FG was wide sending the teams into the locker room with Saskatchewan ahead by 13. K Noel Prefontaine cut the lead to 12 early in the third quarter when his 71-yard punt went through the end zone at 2:12 for a single. At 9:18 of the third, Bigos sliced the ’Rider lead to 17-8 with a 15-yard FG. McCallum’s 58-yard punting single at 11:46 rounded out the third quarter scoring with Saskatchewan on top by a 18-8 count. The Boatmen scored early in the fourth quarter when RB Tony Smith powered the ball in from the 2-yard line at 1:05. Bigos’ convert was good cutting Saskatchewan’s lead to 3 points. However, this was as close as Toronto would get as a late interception by Saskatchewan DB Mario Smith sealed the win for the ’Riders making the final score 18-15. Saskatchewan’s win bumps their record to 5-9-0 and gives them their first 2-game winning streak of the year. Of note for the Argonauts, SB Derrell Mitchell hauled in his 123rd catch of the 1998 season breaking the old Argo single season pass reception record set by Mike "Pinball" Clemons in 1997 (122).
