Game Notes

Game Summary

It was a beautiful autumn day in Montreal when the Toronto Argonauts took to the field against the Alouettes. The game was an important East Division match-up with both teams jockeying for playoff positions with three weeks to go in the regular season. A win by Montreal would mean they would only be one point behind division leading Hamilton, while a Toronto win would put them one point behind Montreal for second place. Montreal scored first when K Terry Baker hoofed a 9-yard FG at 7:46 of the opening quarter. However, Toronto responded before the end of the period when QB Kerwin Bell hooked up with SB Derrell Mitchell for a 33 yard scoring play at 13:01. K Arek Bigos’ convert was good giving Toronto a 7-3 lead at the end of the quarter. 1:10 into the second quarter DB Kelly Wiltshire intercepted QB Anthony Calvillo’s errant pass and returned it 10 yards for the major. Bigos was good on the convert as well as a 37-yard FG at 10:30 to stretch Toronto’s lead to 14 points. Baker added a 43-yard FG with one second remaining in the half making the score 17-6 Toronto going into the third quarter. In the third period RB Mike "Pinball" Clemons took a 13-yard Bell pass to the end zone at 8:55. Bigos’ convert extended Toronto’s lead to 18 points. In the fourth quarter Montreal scored their first major of the afternoon when QB Tracy Ham, who replaced Calvillo in the second half, found WR Chris Armstrong in the end zone for a 7-yard play. Baker’s convert at 1:35 cut the Toronto lead to 11 points. However, that was as close as Montreal would get as WR Duane Dmytryshyn and RB Tony Smith both caught 8-yard TD passes at 5:26 and 9:40 respectively to put the game out of reach for Montreal. Bigos’ converts on both plays were both successful. Toronto finished the scoring in the match when Baker was forced to concede a two-point safety at 12:29 making the final from Molson Stadium the Toronto Argonauts 40, Montreal Alouettes 13.
